Quick Tips

Remove Oil Stains from Interlock

Treat stains as soon as possible to prevent the oil from deeply penetrating the surface. The longer stains rest on the surface, the harder they are to remove. Take a heavy-duty cloth and clean the excess oil from the surface. Then, apply a liquid detergent and let it soak for several minutes. Finish by washing with hot water. Repeat this process as necessary.

Prevent Weeds & Ants

Weeds that appear in the joints of interlocking brick can be removed by hand or with herbicides. Biodegradable products are best, as they will not harm surrounding plants or water supplies. A sealer can also be used to stop seeds from growing, and to prevent ants from making a home in your interlock.

Snow & Ice Removal

In most cases, interlock can be plowed and shoveled the same as asphalt or concrete driveways. The edges and joints around the brickwork actually help melt snow and ice. A rubber edged plow is best, while sharp ice-chopping implements and rock salt should be avoided. A snow-melting system offers the safest way of clearing interlock of snow and ice.

Keeping Joint Sand in Place

Typically, the dirt that settles on top of interlock joints is enough to keep important sand-filled joints in place. However, in areas with strong winds or runoff, joint sand may need to be periodically replenished. If the problem persists, a liquid sealer can be applied to cure the joints and help hold them in place.

Slowing Down Color Fade

Although the pigment in interlock brick is very stable over time, dirt, wear and harsh weather conditions can eventually cause colors to fade. By cleaning the concrete pavers and sealing their surface, the rate of color change can be slowed significantly. This process can also prevent dirt from finding a permanent home in the surface of the concrete.
